She - Thomas Olde Heuvelt

Chapters Unbound: Episode 41

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆

“She”(Het laatste verhaal van Jamie Gunn) by Thomas Olde Heuvelt is a psychological horror novel that plays with storytelling, obsession, and control. The story follows Jamie Gunn, a writer whose life becomes increasingly entangled with a narrative that refuses to stay contained. Rather than relying on constant action, the book builds tension through perspective, atmosphere, and the slow tightening of its focus.

“Paralyzed, I stared at that sickening, gaping mouth.”

For this episode, the print is based on a moment from the book that immediately stood out while reading. It’s one of those images that stays with you once you’ve encountered it on the page, without needing explanation or framing.

She on the Page

The piece came together by focusing on that image alone. I didn’t look for a broader scene or surrounding context. The description in the book was enough to work from, without adding anything of my own.

“I heard the flesh scissors snap — SNIP! — and immediately a half-pouting mouth of blood spatters bloomed in the white cotton.”

The print and the book meet in their directness. Both present what is happening plainly and move on, without guidance or reflection. There’s no attempt to soften the moment or explain it away.

After She Was Told

This book took a little longer to pull me in than I expected. The opening felt more restrained than some of Olde Heuvelt’s other work. Once the story found its rhythm, though, it became impossible to stop. From that point on, I was fully absorbed and deeply impressed.

I genuinely enjoyed this novel. The buildup pays off, and the intensity feels earned rather than forced. It stayed with me after finishing, and reminded me why his work continues to stand out for me.
