Not all partnerships are created equal. Some are downright fatal.
Fairy tales have a way of pulling back the curtain on human nature, and Cat and Mouse in Partnership does so with claws out. What begins as a story about teamwork quickly spirals into deception, betrayal, and a pot of fat that never stood a chance.
This week’s scene captures the start of their fragile partnership. While the mouse, trusting and naive, thinks it has found a reliable partner, the cat has other ideas. Its hunger, paired with a cunning plan, sets the stage for the story’s inevitable collapse.
A Promising Beginning
The setup appears innocent enough. The cat and mouse decide to store a pot of fat for the winter, agreeing to save it for when they truly need it. Trust is the foundation of this plan. However, temptation soon creeps in, and the cracks begin to show.
The cat, unable to resist, sneaks off to “check” on the pot. During each visit, it takes a little more, leaving the pot emptier every time. Eventually, all that remains is a hollow shell and a very satisfied cat.
In the meantime, the mouse continues to believe in their partnership. Sadly, by the time it discovers the truth, there is nothing left to salvage. It is a cautionary tale about misplaced trust and ignoring obvious warning signs.

I wanted the image to reflect the imbalance between them. The mouse, small and hopeful, represents the vulnerability of trust. In contrast, the cat, large and imposing, symbolizes the danger of unchecked selfishness. This dynamic highlights the power struggle at the heart of their story.
The Bitter Lesson
Cat and Mouse in Partnership serves as a warning about trust, temptation, and the consequences of manipulation. The cat is not just greedy; it actively plans its betrayal, masking its intentions until the very end.
For me, this tale speaks to the cracks that form when trust is taken for granted. Partnerships can be fragile, and some are destined to fail.
